August Wrap Up

August has been a good reading month, I even add a non-planned book to my list. If you’re on Instagram you may see or hear about Books and beyond Club . If not, is an Instagram book club that selects a book monthly  by letting people choose between 5 books. This month was Aristotle and Dante discover the secrets of the Universe and was a
book that I wanted to read for a long long time. So this club helped me to read it before I have planned 😀 The theme for next month will be DANGEROUS MAGIC. Go and check it, maybe you will be interested😉

Anyway, here you have my readings for this month 😄

  • Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by J.K Rowling, Thorne and Tiffany (review here)
  • Ruined by Amy Tintera (review)

  • Saga Vol VI by B. Vaughan and F. Staples
  • Ms Marvel Vol I by Wilson and Alphona
  • Aristotle and Dante discover the secrets of the Universe by B. Alire Sáenz

Unfortunately, I’ve been quite poorly this month and I didn’t manage to complete my TBR 😩😭

I started all of them and these three books are great and amazing so far but it’s not easy to read when you have fever or a terrible migraine 🤕🤒🤕😩

Will definitely try to finish all soon 😀

  • Inherited by Freedom Matthews
  • Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare
  • El libro de los Bardos by Lena Valenti

Review: Ms Marvel Vol.II

COMIC – SCI-FI/FANTASY – WILSON & ALPHONA – MARVEL COMICS  – MS MARVEL Vol. II
Whoimg_2398 is the Inventor, and what does he want with the all-new Ms Marvel and all her friends? Maybe Wolverine can help! If Kamala can stop fangirling out about meeting her favourite super hero, that is. Then, Kamala crosses paths with Inhumanity — by meeting the royal dog, Lockjaw! But why is Lockjaw really with Kamala? As Ms Marvel discovers more about her past, the Inventor continues to threaten her future. Kamala bands together with some unlikely heroes to stop the maniacal villain before he does real damage, but has she taken on more than she can handle? And how much longer can Ms Marvel’s life take over Kamala Khan’s? Kamala Khan continues to prove why she’s the best (and most adorable) new super hero there is!

Collecting Ms. Marvel(2014) #6-11.

The first volume of this comic was awesome and this one continues with the story of Kamala and her superpowers but the most important, carry on with the story of Kamala trying to find who she is, who is the Inventor and how to defeat him and a great and fantastic story about friendship, about working with others and about asking for help when needed.

The art in this volume is beautiful and has vivid colours. Even though, I’ve noted some differences between this volume and the first one. Kamala looks a bit different.

Has been great to meet other characters like Lockjaw (adorable! I want one ☺️😝) Wolverine (the scenes with Kamala and him were awesome and funny!), Medusa…and see old ones like Kamala’s parents or Bruno.

And as I’ve said, this volume talks about friendship and about being able to recognise when we need help even if we have superpowers. I think this is a great subject to explore in a comic and Marvel always use a bit of humour making it easier. I’ve enjoyed a lot this volume and definitely has met my IMG_2471.JPGexpectations. Hope volume 3 maintains the same level.

Review: Saga Vol. VI

COMIC – SCI-FI/FANTASY – BRIAN K. VAUGHAN – IMAGE COMICS – SAGA Vol. VI
img_2376
After a dramatic time jump, the three-time Eisner Award winner for Best Continuing Series continues to evolve, as Hazel begins the most exciting adventure of her life: kindergarten. Meanwhile, her starcrossed family learns hard lessons of their own.

Compiles issues #31-36

I’m back in this amazing universe and this volume was a complete surprise. I didn’t expect the story going on that way and OMG, I love it!

img_2378

Again we follow our favourite couple and they finally manage to reunite the family and be back with their daughter. Also, we follow the story of other characters like Prince Robot or the Will. I like that a lot, that we keep knowing what happen with secondary characters and not only following the main ones. You can have a mayor perspective of the whole Saga universe.

img_2380
The art in these comics is awesome and Fiona has managed to maintain it all the way till volume 6 and I’m sure she will carry on. The story continues bringing that mix of humour, reality, sadness and unexpected events and I’m so happy this volume goes back to the starting level as the last two volumes weren’t as good as I wanted to but this one, is amazing 😀

And again, if you haven’t fallen into this universe, please run to a bookstore or comicstore and jump into this amazing hole. This adventure worth it! 🙃

The Goodreads tag

THE GOODREADS TAG – AUGUST 2016 –

The Goodreads Tag is a tag that was going around Booktube ages ago! I have recently re-watched one of this videos and I thought was time for me to answer this questions.😺

I love Goodreads! I think is an amazing site/app and kind of my holy grail and my go to source for book information. Also,  helps me to track my massive TBR pile! However, I’m terrible at keeping it updated. I should improve that.🙀🙀

This tag consists of twelve questions, so let me start

1. WHAT WAS THE LAST BOOK YOU MARKED AS ‘READ’?

Oh, this is an easy one. It was Ruined by Amy Tintera

img_2368

2. WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?

Well…here I have a bit of a discrepancy. I’m actually reading Saga Vol. VI but if you check my goodreads this shelf will show three books:

  1. Saga Vol. VI by Vaughan and Staples – As I’ve said, I’m currently reading this comic and looks like will finish it today. Is so good.
  2. Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare – I did start this one in April, after the Superfan event in London but, unfortunately, I went through a reading blockage and I have to restart it from the beginning but it’s on my actual TBR list.
  3. El libro de los Bardos by Lena Valenti – with this book I had the same problem, I started in June but I could get over the reading blockage and it is now on my TBR list for this month.

3. WHAT WAS THE LAST BOOK YOU MARKED AS ‘TO READ’?

Probably this is the section that has more books on it. ☺️☺️ I’m adding nearly daily books and books that I want to read. My last addition has been Furthermore by Tahereh Mafi. Just the cover is adorable and the story seems great. A win-win book.

IMG_2394

4. WHAT BOOK DO YOU PLAN TO READ NEXT?

My next two reads will be:

  1. Ms Marvel Vol.II by Wilson and Alphona
  2. Inherited by Freedom Matthews

5. DO YOU USE THE STAR RATING SYSTEM?

I do use it and generally, I love it but I think it could me awesome and not just brilliant if it allows you to give a half star. Sometimes a book is 3.5 or 4.5 and I have to rate it with 3 stars or 4 stars and clarify in my review the real one. Seriously, give a chance to the half star damn it! 🙏🏻🙏🏻

6. ARE YOU DOING A 2016 READING CHALLENGE?

Indeed, I am. To be honest, my past two years have been horrible on the reading side and this year one of my new year’s resolution was to read more. So far I’m happy about how things are going. I set my challenge on 30 books and so far I’ve read 19 books, so it’s looking good.

7. DO YOU HAVE A WISHLIST?

No really. All the books that I add on my «to be read» shelf are part of my wishlist but I have not a proper wishlist that I use in Goodreads. I have a couple in other places like Waterstones, Amazon, BookDepository or Wordery. But again, I’m not good at keeping them updated.

8. WHAT BOOK DO YOU PLAN TO BUY NEXT?

This is quite an easy question again. I will buy Nevernight by Jay Kristoff on Friday. The book is available tomorrow but I’m working a twelve hours shift so on Friday I will have this beauty. I’ve heard amazing things about it and just look this cover…love it!😻😻

IMG_2395

9. DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVORITE QUOTES, WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE A FEW?

I do. Again, terrible updating this section but here you can have a couple:

“If you want to know what a man’s like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals.”
J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

“Dumbledore watched her fly away, and as her silvery glow faded he turned back to Snape, and his eyes were full of tears.
«After all this time?»
«Always,» said Snape.”
J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

“Not all those who wander are lost.”
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

“El amor no entiende de tiempo. Cuando llega, llega, y no importa que conozcas a esa persona desde hace cinco años o de sólo un simple cruce de miradas. Porque el amor es algo tan poderoso que escapa al control del tiempo, simplemente porque es algo que no se puede medir con nada.
Jade
Serie Vanir 1- El libro de Jade”
Lena Valenti, El libro de Jade

10. WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE AUTHORS?

I don’t think this list is updated at all but here we are:

J.R Ward, J.K Rowling, Cassandra Clare, Diana Gabaldon, Stephanie Meyer, Kerstin Gier, Ángeles Ibirika, Lena Valenti, G.G Martin, J. R. R Tolkien, Noah Gordon…

As I said, this list is very out of date and need an update urgently. I’ll add it to my «things to do» list.

11. HAVE YOU JOINED ANY GROUPS?

I have joined a total of 3 books but, being honest, I haven’t participated much…SHAME ON ME!😳😳

12. HOW MANY SHELVES TO DO YOU HAVE ON GOODREADS?

Well…I have the obvious «read» «to be read» and «currently reading» and then I’ve added «favs-2016» and «favs-all-times» that clearly show what will you find on it.

Well, those were my answer to the Goodreads Tag! If you want to do this, feel free to do so but, if you do do it, leave a link in the comments section so I can check out your answers!

Lots of love,

Angela😘😘

Review: Ruined

Fantasy – Amy Tintera – Harper Teen – Ruined –
Emelina Flores has nothing. Her home in Ruina has been ravaged by war. She lacks the powers of her fellow Ruined. Worst of all, she witnessed her parents’ brutal murders and watched helplessly as her sister, Olivia, was kidnapped.
But because Em has nothing, she has nothing to lose. Driven by a blind desire for revenge, Em sets off on a dangerous journey to the enemy kingdom of Lera. Somewhere within Lera’s borders, Em hopes to find Olivia. But in order to find her, Em must infiltrate the royal family.
In a brilliant, elaborate plan of deception and murder, Em marries Prince Casimir, next in line to take Lera’s throne. If anyone in Lera discovers Em is not Casimir’s true betrothed, Em will be executed on the spot. But it’s the only way to salvage Em’s kingdom and what is left of her family.
Em is determined to succeed, but the closer she gets to the prince, the more she questions her mission. Em’s rage-filled heart begins to soften. But with her life—and her family—on the line, love could be Em’s deadliest mistake.

This book came to me on my first FairyLoot box and by the sound ofimg_1187 it, my expectations were really high but I must admit that when I started this book I was not falling into the story as I expected. Maybe was because it started with a lot of events and all happening too quick but you actually don’t advance much into the book and its all kind of confusing. You don’t know very well what is going on. So probably that quick story-slow reading took me out a bit…or maybe that this was my reading «post Harry Potter and the Cursed Child»…

Once I get into the story I started to read quicker and to like more the characters even if it took me a bit of time to connect with them. I expected that Em would be colder as she has been planning the plot a long time, she is infiltrated in the castle, enemies all around and is looking for revenge so, at first I couldn’t understand why she falls so easily for Cas. I understand that he is not at all as he supposed to be and that Cas appeared to be the black sheep in his family. The one that thinks different, the one willing to listen and doubt about things others just follow because his dad says so, the one talking with the service, going out of the castle walls…but that wasn’t enough for me to believe that after that short period of time knowing each other the feelings were just there.

On the other hand, the story has a lot of action and you want to know more about the Ruined, their powers, the life they had before the attack, why Olivia is so powerful, if they won’t be betrayed by Olso and the warriors and if they will success with the revenge. So you keep reading and definitely I will continue with these books. The romance in the story, once you forget about how it started, is cute and gave you some sweet moments in the middle of all the war and death.

SPOILERS

Speaking about deaths…I really felt so sorry when Damian died. That scene was kind of the point when I passed to «this book is alright» to «OH MY GOD, I need to know more» but I didn’t feel anything when the King died and again I think the reason for that was my lack of connection with some characters.

END OF SPOILERS

The end of the book leave you in shock, you can’t believe what just happened and you want to read the next book straight away.

So, overall, I think this is a book that goes from less to more  as long as their characters and with a story that makes you want to know more and more about this universe giving it a 3 /5 stars.

Review: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Fantasy – J.K Rowling, John Tiffany and Jack Thorne – Little, Brown – Harry Potter and the Cursed Child –

Based on an original new story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany, a new play by Jack Thorne, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the eighth story in the Harry Potter series and the first official Harry Potter story to be presented on stage. The play will receive its world premiere in London’s West End on July 30, 2016.
It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children.
While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.

img_2243

Is always difficult to me to put into words my opinion about a Harry Potter book…these books always make me laugh, cry, hold my breath and love them. This one was a bit different. First of all, it comes as a script format so you haven´t as much description about things as in the previous seven but, on the other hand, we know a lot about Harry Potter universe ( seven books, 8 movies well 9 soon with Fantastic Beast nearly here) that when you read about places, things or people you know all about. Was a bit weird to read this format but once you get used to it, you fly through it and when you notice it you want to slow down a bit just to stay a bit longer with this characters…
img_2246

Overall I love this book, LOVE IT. I find so interesting to see our loved characters 19 years after, as adults. I find funny some scenes and I think is great to see them as humans and no as heroes. All of them (Harry, Hermione, Ron, Draco…) have gone through a cruel war when they were just children-teenagers and I don’t think building a life after it is an easy task. We see them with their fears and their sad moments. With their lights and shadows and that has been always present in these books.

About the new generation…is great. My new favourite character is Scorpius. I always thought Draco was a misunderstood character and that being him was not easy at all. Scorpius is great, funny, loyal and special.

Albus is a good character also but at times he is like «oh common Albus, get over it»

I’m now so nostalgic and with that «depression» after a Harry Potter book. Has been great to come back, to read about adventures, magic, danger, friendship, love…and I wish we could have more and more of this world. Will try my best to go to the theatre and watch this play because definitely worth the investment.

the stories we love best do live in us forever. So whether you come back by page or by the big screen, Hogwarts will always be there to welcome you home.

J.K Rowling

Now, if you want to stop reading, do it but if you carry on you will find SPOILERS so please, if you haven’t read this book yet…come back to this point once you have done it.

This book has been great and I loved the friendship between Albus and Scorpius. I would like to see Harry and Draco as friends but I understand that there are so many circumstances that make this kind of impossible …but Albus-Scorpius team is AWESOME.

As I’ve said before, Scorpius is my new favourite character. He is funny, kind of a geek, intelligent…he is so great since his first appearance. Albus is a very interesting character but, at times, find him a bit egocentric…like Scorpius told him her mum is very poorly and he is on and on about how he wishes Harry wasn’t his dad…or when in the alternative universe is Scorpius the one who goes to Albus and tells Albus «fuck them, we are friends» but also Albus is funny and you can understand all the pressure he has just for being Harry Potter son and a Slytherin. Fact that I personally love. Slytherin has been the house of mad people (Tom, Bellatrix…and a lot more) but also the house of heroes (Severus, Regulus, Narcissa…) and I think is perfect that Albus has been chosen in this house.

Now, Delphi…well…sorry I don’t feel sorry for her. Ok, her parents were evil and cruel, been raised by another evil couple..she has a high potential to be evil but you are able to make decisions and to choose your path…she chooses to be evil and kill innocent people and I saw something on her from the beginning but never thought who she was and what were her plans. The three of them are cursed. Albus has to live under the shadow of the great Harry Potter and accept this figure and his dad as a human and no a hero. He can also be cruel but he chooses not to. Scorpius…well he is the only son of Draco Malfoy, he has to deal with all those rumours that point him as Voldemort son and the loss of her mum…no easy, no the happiest life but he chooses to be good. Delphi…has not an easy life but she could choose different.

The plot…time travelling back to save Cedric Diggory gives us the chance to see again some characters…like Cedric and SEVERUS. Oh my god, I cried just reading that he was alive in that alternate universe and when he sacrificed himself again…pure hero. He ALWAYS will have a special place in my heart. If we could see Sirius again, this book would be perfect. Also, I enjoyed a lot the moment that Draco goes with the Golden Trio to save Albus and Scorpius and Hermione is bossy and he enjoys it and clearly fit in…ADORABLE. Talking about Draco…that moment when Harry and Draco fight and he calls Harry «old man» and Harry is » we are the same age, Draco» great moment.

And I cried…this book is so emotional. That end, Harry letting Voldemort kill his parents and he stays to watch it…oh boy! Or when Draco confessed how difficult and lonely he was in Hogwarts…or all the moments father-son between Harry and Albus…or when Albus and Scorpius saw Lily and James with the baby Harry…seriously…so emotional book.

Another point that made me emotional was seeing in official writing a Scorpius-Rose theme. All those fics, all those theories…real, are real!!

I think is time to stop this and try to accept that the book is over…

Thank you so much for reading this..even is you just stayed to the spoilers free part or you read all. Hope that you have enjoyed Harry Potter and the Cursed Child as much as I did.

JULY FAVOURITES

– JULY FAVORITES –

July: sunny and hot days, holidays time for many people…summer 🙂 I’m not on holidays but July has been a good month and choosing my favourites has been hard.

BOOKS:

July has broken my reading blockage and has been quite productive. It’s hard just to choose one but in this comic-month, I think Ms Marvel has won the title of favourite of the month 🙂

img_2068img_2182

SKINCARE:

With all the heat and the humidity and the sunny days what I hate is the feeling of heavy products in my skin. Bio-essence is a great Asian brand, quite cheap if you compare with other skincare brands and very light-feeling in the skin. I’ve been using this three products and I’m very happy with the results. Check them here

img_2279-1

FASHION:

One of my «obsessions» are «leather» jackets. I would love to have a real leather jacket but this would be very very expensive. In the meantime, I have found this beauty in Zara and I really really love it.

img_2278-1

TRIPS:

I’ve been very busy working this month but I’ve managed to spend a lovely day in London full of geek stuff and discovered a lovely place called The house of Minalima dedicated to Harry Potter. I was tempted to buy nearly everything there. Definitely, a place that I will visit again.

MOVIE & TV SHOW:

I was so so so happy when Netflix brought back one of my favourites tv show ever!! Gilmore Girls is back! And I can’t wait for those 4 new episodes telling us what happen after season 7.

MUSIC:

This month I felt quite nostalgic and I loved again this song from My Chemical Romance:

Also, the great Adele has been in my ears on my way to work with this amazing song:

VIDEOGAMES:

I haven’t played properly a videogame but I fell into the temptation and started to play Pokemon Go like lots and lots of people. Is a great app and makes my way back home funnier than before. 🙂

Hope your July has been great

August´16 TBR

Hello, hello 🙂 How is the summer going? Can’t believe that we are already in August, why is this year going so fast?

This month I’m quite optimistic as July has been very productive on the reading side, so inspired by it, these are the books I’m hoping to read in the next 31 days.

  1. Lady Midnight  by Cassandra Clare – I started this book a few months ago and then went into a reading blockage… 😦 hopefully, this time, will be different as I have read and listened to a lot of good things about this beauty.
  2. El libro de los Bardos by Lena Valenti – time to carry on also with this saga. Again, I started and fell into the «no time to reading, life is so stressful!» time.
  3. Ruined by Amy Tintera – one of the books that I received in my Fairyloot box…really looks like a brilliant story.
  4. Inherited by Freedom Mathews – pirates? adventures? who can resist this? 😀
  5. Ms Marvel Vol. II by Wilson / Alphona / Wyatt – last month I’ve read the first one and you can see my opinion here. Can´t wait to know more about this marvel universe.
  6. Saga Vol. VI by B.K Vaughan / F. Staples – what can I say that I’ve already not said about these comics? Hope the great level of the story is maintained in this volume.

Happy reading to everyone and enjoy the sunny and hot days 😉

Lots of love,

Angela xx
