30964236Whatever you’ve heard about Caraval, it doesn’t compare to the reality. It’s more than just a game or a performance. It’s the closest you’ll ever find to magic in this world . . .
Welcome, welcome to Caraval―Stephanie Garber’s sweeping tale of two sisters who escape their ruthless father when they enter the dangerous intrigue of a legendary game.
Scarlett has never left the tiny island where she and her beloved sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval, the far-away, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show, are over.
But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.
Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. But she nevertheless becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic with the other players in the game. And whether Caraval is real or not, she must find Tella before the five nights of the game is over, a dangerous domino effect of consequences is set off, and her sister disappears forever.

Caraval is one of these books that come with a lot of hype and high expectations. Has been one of the most anticipated releases of lots of people, including myself. The covers of this book are gorgeous and I’m seriously thinking about buying all of them even if that means having 5 copies of the same book. Am I crazy? Am I the only one?

Overall, I loved this book and I gave it 5/5 stars. This book is full of colours even if invites you to get lost in the dark of the night, magic (what a magical journey) mystery and clues, adventures and great characters. I can’t wait to read the second one and know more about this world.

When we first meet Donatella or Tella, we found an impulsive girl but as everything in Caraval, nothing is what seems to be and by the end of the book we found a different Tella, still impulsive and a bit of the crazy one but also showed a brave and clever woman.

Julian…what can I say about him? I have liked him, loved him, hated him, been so angry with him but I guess he has won my heart slowly.

Scarlet…what an awesome character. Seriously, she is brilliant and so complex and strong but frail at times…she will fight always for what she believes and she has made me laugh on more than one occasion. I’ve have been mad also, sometimes I wanted to shake her and told her «what are you doing?» Probably,  she took me into the game as far as she was.

The story is a fresh breeze into this genre. It has a good rhythm and I haven’t found it boring or dense. It makes you fall into the game and as the book is advancing, you don’t know what to believe in or who you should trust. You will feel like Scarlet: confused, angry, sad, happy, in love, more confused and frustrated…if you haven’t noticed yet, this book is full of feelings and that, I think, is part of its magic and part of what makes it so special. Definitely, Stephanie Garber is an author to keep an eye on. I will check and most likely read any of her books.

«Every person has the power to change their fate if they are brave enough to fight for what they desire more than anything«
